When You Feel Stressed And Anxious31st May 2017
“How have you been?”
“I’ve been busy.”
In the past few weeks, this has been my most common response when people asked me how I’ve been. At first, the busyness seemed bearable, welcomed even because of the feeling that I am actually doing and accomplishing something. But as the days of busyness slowly turned into weeks of busyness filled with assessments and to-do lists that never seem to end, I began to feel anxious and tired. Stress started to grow inside my mind and constantly reminds me of the things I still yet need to do and worry whispers to me that I won’t have enough time to do everything. At times, I was so stressed to the point where I feel paralysed to do anything at all, where studies and serving became merely tasks rather than a tremendous blessing God has blessed me with. So gradually I began to spend less time with God and more time alone, trying to rely on my own strength to do my studies and serving at church. But an exam that I worked so hard for weeks and nearly failed last week reminded me yet again that I can do nothing without relying on God’s strength.
As I was thinking about how I could have done better for this exam, the scripture from Philippians 4:6-7 popped into my mind:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:6-7
This scripture reminds me that even though there seems to be a mountain of things to do that seems so much bigger than I can bear, I have a God who is bigger than any mountain or storm that I will ever face. Even in times of disappointments and unexpected circumstances, God is ultimately in control. And even though surrendering ourselves to God doesn’t mean that we won’t be busy, God promises to give us His peace, which guards our hearts and minds against anxiousness and stress. And no matter what happens, God’s promise of giving us His peace in every situation will never fail. So in every situation that we face, we don’t need to be self-reliant as the world tells us to be. Rather, we can, with thanksgiving, cry out to God for help, and trust and surrender everything into His hands. And when we do, God will give us His peace to see every blessing in our lives and the strength to face whatever comes our way.
Dear Heavenly Father, We thank you for this season of busyness where we can learn to rely on You more and to trust You more. We surrender all our worries and stress into Your hands and we pray that You will supply us with Your peace and strength. And help us to see Your blessings and grace each day. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen!
