In You We Trust

19th September 2017

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises. In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

One Tuesday night in August, I attended prayer meeting led by a Taiwanese pastor and his wife. From that night, we were challenged to pray using Bible verses with an accountability partner. The challenge is to read the verses over and over again in prayer. The purpose is to feel closer to God’s word as we repeat it and allow us to meditate on it, and teach us how to pray.

My accountability partner and I did well for the first week, we didn’t keep it up over the weekends due to our serving and “busyness”. However, we didn’t call each other at all in the last week. Everyday, I remembered we had this challenge to do; but every night, I felt lazy, I didn’t want to do it and it was hard (that’s why it was called a challenge). Over time, I felt guilty and distant from God. I tried doing my own Bible reading every morning on the bus, but it wasn’t the same. It just felt like...reading. I couldn’t connect to the words, it didn’t speak to me, I felt like I was reading meaningless words.

Praise God He never gave up on me. My accountability partner called me today and we read Psalm 22:1-10 and prayed with it. After repeatedly praying over all the verses at least 3 times each, we shared to each other what we received from this passage. My favourite verses were

“In you our ancestors put their trust, they trusted and you delivered them. To you they cried out and were saved, in you they trusted and were not put to shame.”

I love how it encouraged me that God is always there. When I cry out, He hears. When I put my trust in Him, he reaches out and delivers me. David reminded me that though I feel distant from God, though it seems like God has forsaken me and He doesn’t hear my cries, I can have the confidence and faith that when I put my trust in Him, He will deliver me and save me.

Through this daily challenge, I felt closer to God’s Word and by meditating and repeating it, I could truly understand what God wants to tell me. Our God is the God who saved Israel, He is enthroned as the Holy One. He is worthy of our praise and He is the One Israel praises.
