He Gave His One and Only Son21st February 2018
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” -John 3:16
This was probably one of the very first Bible verses that I memorised as a kid going to Sunday School. But the meaning of what God did didn’t impact me until I really understood what grace is. Grace is undeserved. Our Heavenly Father loves me and you, not just love a little bit but He SO loved us that He gave us His Son to die on the cross for our sins. We don’t need to do anything except believe Jesus is our Lord and saviour. If that’s not enough grace, God gives us eternal life. We are destined to die from the moment we were born because we live in a sinful world; but God has freely given us eternal life, something we do not deserve.
Looking back, I could see God’s undeserving favours in my life, grace upon grace. Whether in my studies, in my relationships with family and friends, in my work, in my serving at church, it’s just God’s overflowing blessings in every single step of my life. I remember last year at my lowest point when uni was getting hard, when there was no one I could turn to but God alone, His grace embraced me and He poured out His love for me. Uni got a lot better and so did my relationship with God. All I needed to do was believe.
Dear Heavenly Father We love you. We thank you for giving us your only Son to die on the cross for us so that we can have this intimate relationship with you. We thank you for this undeserving grace that you have lavished upon us. There are times when we turn away from you but we know that the moment we turn back to you, you are already running towards us, ready to embrace us with your love and grace. Help us to believe when it gets tough. We pray all this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
