God Centred Relationships22nd March 2018
Have you ever wondered what it means to have a God-centred relationship? In church I often hear other people say how important it is to have a God-centred relationship not just with your other half but also your relationships with your friends and family, so that we may truly enjoy our lives in abundance of what God has prepared for us. But what does this really look like?
Often I would imagine a God-centred relationship to be bible study with one another daily or weekly, sharing with one another their thoughts about a particular sermon and going to church every week with them.
But let’s look at what Paul tells us in Ephesians 5:
“For wives, this means submit to your husband’s as to the Lord. For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the saviour of his body, the church.” -Ephesians 5:22-23
“For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s work” -Ephesians 5:25-26
In the passage Paul mentions the relationship between husband and wife, but the message is intended to speak how every relationship is to look like. In verse 22-23 it talks about the wife submitting to their husband, the act of submission is a sign of showing respect, humbling oneself in order to lift up and empower others.
As for v25-26 Paul tells the husband to love their wives and lay down his life for her just as what Jesus did for us, to prioritise the wellbeing of his wife’s over his own.
So from these 4 verses Paul reminds up that in a God-centred relationship that is guided by the spirit it will include respect, humbling oneself, love one another and laying down your life for another. If these elements are present all the things such as bible study, spiritual sharing and going to church comes will come naturally.
Dear heavenly father I thank you that you have shown us what it's like to live our lives in spiritual guidance as you have given your only son to show us the best example there is. I pray that each day we can continue to strive to be more like Jesus and have a spirit filled and God-centred relationship with everyone I meet, I pray this in Jesus name, Amen!
