10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord) - Matt Redman

10000 reasons is one of the songs that really remind me to praise and worship the Lord in all my seasons. To sing to the Lord with a new heart, a heart that is not driven by my mood, my emotions, but my willingness to surrender and sing praise to Him.

Back in high school, I used to struggle sometimes to focus myself purely on just praising and worshiping God when things just didn’t work out well, whether it was school works, relationships, or even my poor health condition. When I first heard the song back then, I feel like God was speaking to me through the lyrics.

The sun comes up It’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass
And whatever lies before me
Let me be singing
When the evening comes

While praise and worship team’s leading, I felt this warmness in my heart and my heart was softened by the Holy Spirit that I was able to sing loud and praise loud easily over all sorts of negative emotions in my head. I didn’t think much back then, but after hearing the story of Paul and Silas (Acts 16:16-40) in one of the worship session, I realized that when we praise God, it isn’t based on the our moods, but it is based on the willingness and faith trusting that God is in control, a strong declaration in every season.

Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul worship His Holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your Holy name

The story of Paul and Silas talks about the power of praise. In the story, they were being badly beaten and were been put into prison, but what they did in prison was amazing. They sang hymns to God!

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.” (Act 16:25-26)

God has loosen up my chains, His words has given me a new perspective on how I should and we should sing praise to Him. Speaking praise to God is so important especially in our hardest times. And I really love how it is put into songs that we can sing it out loud!

You’re rich in love And You’re slow to anger
Your name is great
And Your heart is kind
For all Your goodness
I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons
For my heart to find

We sing because His name is good, He is the way, the truth and the life, His love is unending. He cares for us more than we think we care for ourselves. God is our strength and shelter, we will sing praise to Him.

And on that day When my strength is failing
The end draws near
And my time has come
Still my soul will
Sing Your praise unending
Ten thousand years
And then forevermore
forevermore
